Maria comes from a troubled home where she both witnessed and experienced violence. Now that her father has been restrained by law her physical bruises will heal quickly but the emotional damage may remain for much longer. 

The nine-year-old girl has difficulty in relating both to other children and to adults, and had to repeat her first year at school. 

Now, with one-to-one tuition from a remedial teacher in Blythswood’s after-school programme, her performance at school is starting to improve. She is learning not to feel threatened by everyone around her.

Her school teacher is aware of a change in the girl and says: “Attending Blythswood does Maria good.”
