Poultry funded by Blythswood’s gift catalogue augments the household budget for families like that of Nadege.
Poultry helps family of peanut seller
Two hundred birds have been distributed to nine community groups in a low-income district of Bujumbura, Burundi’s largest city. Funded by gifts to Blythswood’s gift catalogue, the poultry project required the construction of coops which were ready by November last year.
Nadege is one of ten women who head households in her group. Abandoned by her husband, she has to support three children between the ages of two and ten years.
Francine Ngendakuriyo manages the project for World Outreach Initiatives, Blythswood’s partner organisation in Burundi. She says: “Nadege tries to earn a living by selling peanuts by the roadside. But she struggles to pay the rent and to feed the children.
“She is deeply grateful to everyone who has blessed her with this small-scale farming opportunity which helps provide protein for the children.”
