Saira with her own copy of Job the Patient Friend: Blythswood has supported Pakistan Sunday School Ministry to produce children’s books in Urdu
Bible stories open up a whole new world
Saira is 12. Her dad died when she was young and her mum works as a cleaner in order to pay the rent and feed her five children. Relative poverty is a daily fact of life for Pakistan’s Christian minority and children like Saira grow up with the awareness that society looks down on them.
One day Saira accompanied her mother on a cleaning job and showed an interest in some colourful children’s books. It transpired the lady of the house was a Sunday School teacher. She invited Saira to come to Sunday School.
And Sunday School has opened up a whole new world of Bible stories to Saira. The ancient story of Job – the rich man who fell on hard times – has struck a chord with the cleaner’s daughter. She can tell you what she likes about Job.
“Job had strong faith,” she says. “He went through hard times and lost everything but he never lost his faith in God. His story inspires me to be patient, to think about other people, and to be thankful for what I have. We must trust God when times are hard.”
