The village in which Jhaman Das grew up, in southeast Pakistan, has a simple agrarian lifestyle. Homes consist of round mud huts under heavily thatched roofs and people raise sheep to make a living. When floods hit in 2022, people’s houses were simply washed away.
“We were forced to live under the open sky,” Jhaman, now 19, remembers.
“Shortage of clean drinking water was a huge problem and people became sick as a result.”
A team from Life through Sports, one of Blythswood’s partner organisations in Pakistan, visited the village and resolved to help. With support from Blythswood Care they secured a source of clean drinking water, complete with solar panels which power a pump to take the water from deep underground to a holding tank.
“The whole village of more than 100 households benefits greatly,” Jhaman says.
“The women used to walk miles for a bucket of water. Now we can get water whenever we need it. Everyone is very grateful.
