A monthly gift of non-perishable food items such as rice, flour and cooking oil helps Agi and her son to afford the medicines which they need. At Christmas, they also received gifts from Blythswood’s 2024 Shoe Box Appeal.

Food package helps mother and son to cope with ill health and disability

Agnes Csiszer runs Blythswood’s Basis project which assists low-income families in and around Cluj-Napoca, Romania. A year ago, she was in a supermarket carpark when she saw an elderly lady begging for food.

“She told me her name was Agi,” Agnes says. “I know now that’s not her proper name but she says it’s what her mother called her.”

Agi is 70 and shares a one-roomed flat with her son Gheorghe who has had both legs amputated because of vascular disease. His lack of mobility qualifies 48-year-old Gheorghe for an allowance from the Romanian state so that he can pay a carer to lift him and wash him as necessary, and occasionally to take him out.

“His mother doesn’t keep well” Agnes says. “She cooks and cleans but isn’t fit to be physically nursing anyone,” Agnes says. “Paying for the carer and for rent on their flat leaves them with only about £200 a month for everything else – food, the medicines which they both require, and all day-to-day living expenses.

“Agi and Gheorghe are very grateful for the food package which we deliver from Blythswood each month. It’s a big help to them. In December, Iulian from the Daniel Centre came with me and sang Christmas songs which moved Agi to tears.”
