Sewing skills training leads to family business
Five years after completing the sewing training programme sponsored by Blythswood Care, Daisy continues to run her own small enterprise in the central business district of Harare, Zimbabwe.
Load shedding – power cuts, in other words – disrupts the working day, but in spite of this, Daisy manages to produce a gross profit of upwards of 250 US dollars per month, which is sufficient to pay the rent and cover her transport costs. With two sewing machines, she works alongside her sister and one other person, one of them going out to sell the finished product.
Daisy’s father died the same year she was born, and her mother worked hard in the fields to put her through school. But although she reached secondary level, she was denied the opportunity to sit O level exams.
A former graduate of the sewing skills programme put her in touch with Streams of Hope and told her about the training offered. And since then, she has not looked back.
“This training has had a huge impact on my life and on my family,” says Daisy who is married with one child. She plans to expand her sewing business in partnership with her sister.
