Wesley is motivated to learn

Food and football take Wesley to school

Nine-year-old Wesley begins his day hungry, walking two kilometres to Sargy School on Rusinga Island, Kenya. He knows when he gets to school, there will be breakfast and lunch, vital incentives for children in this low-income community.

But there is more. Wesley loves football. Every day the school has training sessions for junior and senior teams on the football field. Wesley has talent and is focussed on improving his game. But Sargy offers more than meals. Wesley loves football, training daily on the school field. He enjoys music lessons twice a week, along with the normal curriculum of reading, writing and arithmetic.

Although he is young, Wesley appreciates the rare opportunities given to him by Sargy School. “Here he is able to get quality education and at the same time the school caters for his nutritional needs,” says director Samwel Okomo. “Already it is his ambition to train to be a nurse.”

Supported by Blythswood Romania, Sargy School provides 300 children from a low-income community with nutrition and education equipping them to participate in the modern economy of 21st century Kenya.
